Comic
Colourist Works
Some examples of what I used
to do in the comics industry. Most of the time workflow involved
taking black and white line art created by company illustrators,
and using photoshop to colour and 'light' the characters and
paint-in the environments. Other special effects like smoke,
explosions, fire, atmospherics were also my responsability.
Basically everything after the illustration besides speech bubbles
were my responsability.
The colourist is also tasked with making creative choices that
aren't dictated in the illustration or script, but enhance the
narrative. Things such as time of day, weather, lighting angle/colour
are often up to the colourist: A good example is the smoke in
the first frames below. I enhanced the "video-still-shots"
effect of the paneling by making the smoke 'animate' though
the air as if these were taken from a video. It's easy to overlook
but helps to reinforce the passage of time between frames. The
3rd panel's smoke-from-the-nose is another example of creative
elaboration on my part.
The studios i worked for DreamWave and UDON specialized in anime-style
illustration and rendering. Though cover images often took a
completely painted look.
